Adult Children of Alcoholics (ADA)

This program provides insight and support for adult children of alcoholics who want to create a healthier lifestyle and habits and improve self-confidence. Meets Wednesday evenings at the Lake of the Woods Church. (972-9060)

Alcoholics Anonymous

Learn to live the 12 steps to eliminating alcohol dependency from your life while giving and receiving support from others who care about your success. Open to all who want to learn about alcoholism. Meets twice a week at the Lake of the Woods Church. (972-9060)

Alzheimer's Association

Counseling and support services for family and caregivers of those afflicted with Alzheimer's disease. Free caregiver consultations. Meets monthly at the Lake fo the Woods Church. (972-9060)

American Red Cross

The local American Red Cross in Fredericksburg holds a monthly blood drive at LOW. Scheduled dates and times are published in Lake Currents. Appointments preferred. Usually the last Tuesday of the month, every other month. Held in the Clubhouse Lower Level. (972-8403)

Bereavement, Griefshare and Divorce Care

The Lake of the Woods Church sponsors a number of services for those in need of support and guidance when experiencing stressful events in their lives. Dates and times of these group meetings are regularly published in Lake currents under "Human Services", or contact the Church for more information (972-9060).

Cooperative Extension Services

The extension services is a state-funded office that offers a variety of resources to farmers, families and children. The service provides research-backed information in the areas of agriculture, horticulture, family and consumer sciences.

Diabetes Support Groups

Diabetes support groups are available through both Culpeper Regional and Mary Washington Hospitals. See when they meet, published in Lake Currents under "Human Services."

Driver Safety Program

Several times a year the LOW Lions sponsor AARP's "Driver Safety Program," a refresher and defensive driving course designed for older drivers age 50 and up. The course is held for two consecutive half-days and costs $10. Those completing the course are eligible for a discount on their auto liability insurance, which is good for three years. Emergency Training Classes

Available through LOW Volunteer Fire and Rescue, an Ambulance Driver Course, EMT training and CPR classes are offered to members who are interested in learning these skills and/or becoming emergency volunteers. Please consult the Fire and Rescue LOW Directory for contacts.

Hospice Programs

Area hospice services are available through Culpeper Regional Hospital, Mary Washington Hospital and Hospice of the Rapidan. Volunteer opportunities are available for anyone interested in providing end-of-life care for hospice patients in our area. Culpeper Regional Hospital offers a Junior Auxiliary Program for young people age 13 to 17, and acceptance is by application.

Income Tax Preparation Services

Sponsored by the LOW AARP Chapter, this program provides free income tax preparation assistance to eligible seniors from January to April 15. See Lake Currents for additional information.

Mary Washington Hospital Mammogram Van

Once a month, the Mary Washington Mammogram Van visits the LOW community as part of an outreach program to promote women's health. Scheduled dates, costs and information on how to make an appointment are published regularly in Lake Currents. It is usually the last Monday of every month.

Orange County Department of Tourism

The Orange County Department of Tourism stocks the brochure stand located in the vestibule of the Holcomb Building. Volunteers are always needed to meet and greet visitors to Orange County or serve in other ways to promote Orange County Tourism

Services to Abused Families, Inc. (SAFE)

SAFE is alocal program that helps domestic violence victims rebuild their lives after leaving an abusive situation. Shelter for up to 30 days for women and children and 24-hour emergency serices are provided. Volunteers provide support to residents of the emergency shelter, assist with chidlren's groups and manage administrative projects. Volunteer training is provided.

Wilderness Food Pantry

The LOW Lions Club sponsors the Wilderness Food Pantry, located at the intersection of Route 20 and Route 611 behind the Market Place shopping center. Significant suppor tis provided by the LOW Lioness Club in holding food drives to solicit donation s of non-perishable food items and cash to keep the pantry stocked with items fo rarea families in need. Donations are welcome at any time. The Food pantry isopen on the first and thris Thursdays of every month from 9am to noon. Eligibility is determined by income.

Woods Cares

This is a group of AARP volunteers who provide free services for shut-ins and their caregivers within LOW. Services include transportation t oappointments, grocery shopping, picking up prescriptions and other small errands. Volunteers may also be able to help with simple plubming and small appliance repairs, yard work and visits to give caregivers a break. please contact AARP.
